I Don't Like Words -- a homophone poem/homophone poetry

I DON’T LIKE WORDS
by
Gregory K.

I don’t like words.
They don’t make sense.
Words make me upset and tense.
How due eye no witch whirred two ewes
Ore how too right thee won aye chews?
Wile sum mite think words are a bawl,
Eye dew knot care fore words at awl!

This seemed like a good way to end my National Poetry Month poem-a-day run. Obviously, I do like words... most of the time. You can find links to all the April poems over on the right of the blog under the headline "The Poems". And remember, poetry happens here at GottaBook alllll year long, so it won't be long til I'm back at ya, for better or verse.

My Dog is Quite the Dancer -- a poem about dancing/a dance poem

MY DOG IS QUITE THE DANCER
By
Gregory K.

My dog is quite the dancer.
His salsa is a sight!
He does ballet
Throughout the day.
I hear him tap all night.

His rumba moves are perfect.
He’s learning to fandango.
His swim and twist
Should not be missed.
I love to watch him tango.

He jives and does the two step.
He’s king of modern dance.
He’d hit the town
To disco down
If I’d give him the chance.

His cha-cha is enchanting.
His waltz is mighty fine.
Sometimes he gets
The neighbors’ pets
Into a conga line.

People often ask me,
“How can he dance like that?”
His secret? Well…
I guess I’ll tell:
He learned it from my cat!

Losing to My Lunch -- a poem about playing games/a food poem

LOSING TO MY LUNCH
by
Gregory K.

The carrot won at Yahtzee,
But I really think it cheated.
I played the toast in CandyLand:
It could not be defeated.
Blockhead with potato chips?
I lost one hundred times.
The peaches won at Rummikub.
I lost Kerplunk to limes.
The ice cream won at basketball,
Since every shot went “swish.”
The yams won Chutes and Ladders.
The tuna won Go Fish.
My mother always scolded me.
She said, “You know it’s rude.”
But I have different reasons why I never play with food.

Ballonstof. And you?

One of the great joys of the 'net is that you just never know what might happen. Yet here in National Poetry Month I received in the mail the March issue of Ballonstof magazine. I'm sure many of you subscribe to it... or at least all of you who want to read the hot air ballooning magazine of the Netherlands. Anyway, for subscribers, there on page 27 you'll find my poem My Balloon (in English) over a lovely image of a hot air balloon floating off at sunset. And yes, my poem was found via a web search.

Now, I'd written the poem thinking of a child with a balloon on a string, but I will say that it works quite nicely this way, too. It's a gorgeous magazine... and it makes me wish I could read Dutch!

1000 Word Essay -- a homework poem/an art poem

1000 WORD ESSAY

A picture’s worth a thousand words,
And so I drew the sea.
I claimed it was my book report...
My grade was worse than D.

Constant Companions -- a vision poem/a poem about seeing

CONSTANT COMPANIONS
by
Gregory K.

Everywhere I’ve gone today
I’ve seen the same three things:
A greenish toad, a yellow bee,
A kite with seven strings.

I saw them as I walked downstairs
Then at my breakfast table.
My Mom and Dad ignored them all.
I tried but wasn’t able.

Then I saw them in my school.
They came to all my classes.
Wait a second! Check this out!
They’re painted on my glasses.

The Talking Cake Blues -- an excuse poem/an apology poem/a cake poem

THE TALKING CAKE BLUES
by
Gregory K.

I walked in the kitchen and there was your cake.
I know, Mom, it took you the whole day to make.
Its beautiful frosting was something to see.
If you said “it’s perfect!”, I’d have to agree.
But then something happened, though I’m not to blame --
‘Cause Mom, it’s the truth, the cake called me by name!
I said “please stop talking,” but still it called out.
I heard that cake plead. Heard it beg. Heard it shout.
So I did what it wanted. I sure won’t deny it –
I tasted its frosting in hopes of some quiet.
I started out slowly -- one finger, that’s all.
The line that I made in the frosting was small.
Then it begged and it whimpered and asked me for more….
So I pulled out a spoon from the silverware drawer.
I shouted “One mouthful. That’s it! Not another.”
But then the cake said “I’ll just call for your brother.”
Well, you know he’s so young he’d come in on the double.
He’d mess up that cake, and he’d be in such trouble.
That seemed so unfair, and because I respect him,
I kept right on eating. I had to protect him!
I ate and I ate ‘til my mouth was exhausted,
But now that cake’s quiet! (And also unfrosted).
I think you can see how there wasn’t a choice:
I had to do something to silence that voice.
I should stay right here to say “sorry,” I know…
But the TV is calling, so I gotta go!

With blobs of pink and green.
Crayons in the wash are cool!!!
But they don’t get clothes clean.

Sounds Like the End of a Friendship -- an onomatopoeia poem/a poem about sounds

SOUNDS LIKE THE END OF A FRIENDSHIP
by
Gregory K.

Onomatopoeia...
I wouldn’t want to be ya.

You bonk and bang.
You clack and clang.
You thwack and thunk.
You clop and clunk.
You burp and boom.
You zip and zoom.
You splat and splash.
You crack and crash.

It’s hard to have you hang around
When silence is my favorite sound.

Onomatopoeia...
So long now. I’ll see ya.

The Poet Talks Back -- a poem about writing/a poem about poetry

THE POET TALKS BACK
by
Gregory K.

You tire of my puns and jokes?
My meter makes you groan?
You think my rhymes are over-ripe?
My wordplay makes you moan?
There’s little I can say except it really could be worse…
I could become a backwards bard and only write inverse.

You Can't Keep the News from the Gnus -- a very silly poem/a gnu poem

YOU CAN'T KEEP THE NEWS FROM THE GNUS
by
Gregory K.

The new zookeeper called the zoo’s gnu keeper
And asked, “Have the gnus heard the news?
We’re getting new gnus
From a slew of new zoos
In a deal we just couldn’t refuse.”

The zoo’s gnu keeper told the new zookeeper,
“We needed new gnus at the zoo!
But I’m telling you
When I told each zoo gnu
The new gnu news the gnus said they knew!”

(This has been dubbed "the silliest poem" I've written by someone who has read most everything I've written. I take that as high praise!)

Poetry Break

Actually, in this case not a Poetry Break! but instead a break from poetry posts. Not that I have much to say other than to thank y'all for your comments and emails and links and for signing up for the poetry list and, of course, for reading here in any form or fashion. I must say that April is a lot of fun here for me, and the 'excuse' to spend writing time every day on poetry is also quite nice.

Other than that, I'm finding April a month like most others. But there's still time for that to change... and more poetry to come, too. And with that, I gotta book!

Testing My Nerves -- a poem about nerves/a math test poem

TESTING MY NERVES
By
Gregory K.

Shake.
Quake.
Dry mouth.
Sweaty hands.
Can’t relax, can’t rest --
It must be time for my math test.

Yep, that's another Fib (this one fitting in for both National Poetry Month and Math Awareness Month).

There's a Closet in my Nightmare -- a poem about nightmares/a nightmare poem

THERE’S A CLOSET IN MY NIGHTMARE
By
Gregory K.

There’s a closet in my nightmare
With a door that’s open wide.
It gives a perfect view of all the scary things inside.

My hangs-up hang on hangers.
Anxious thoughts dart left and right.
A case of nerves up on a shelf grows bigger every night.

My worries clump in giant groups.
Each fear sits all alone.
Lurking in dark corners is the scary, great unknown.

I used to try to stay awake –
I’d play or read a book.
I didn’t want to fall asleep and have to take a look.

Still, every night my eyes would shut.
I’d drift to sleep and then…
My mind would soon be staring in that closet once again.

But then one night I realized
I could choose to close the door….
Now that closet in my nightmare just can’t scare me anymore.

My Toe -- a poem about a body part/a toe poem

MY TOE
By
Gregory K.

Does anyone know what I did with my toe?
I can’t seem to find it myself.
I’d taken it off to clean under the nail
Then put it up here on this shelf.

I put some clothes on and came back -- it was gone.
Now I’ve checked every room in the house.
I’m starting to think it was taken away
By our cat or our dog or a mouse.

I went to my dad and although he was sad,
He said, “Sorry, go check with your brothers.”
But no one has seen that poor little, lost toe....
Oh well. I still have nine others.

My Friend Michelle -- a friendship poem/a cartoon poem/a poem about a friend

MY FRIEND MICHELLE
by
Gregory K.

My friend Michelle is made of ink.
Her skin is green. Her teeth are pink.
Her right eye’s blue, her left’s maroon.
Yes, she’s a real, live girl cartoon.
When we go walking down the street,
I think we shock the folks we meet.
She always gets so much attention
Since she’s missing one dimension.
“I’m not so flat,” she likes to say,
“Although I know I’m drawn that way.”
Her friendship could not be replaced.
I hope she’ll never be erased.
While some folks keep their joy sedated,
Not Michelle, she’s animated.

Halfway....

April's flying by, at least for me in the blogosphere. I've been having a grand old time reading, writing, and thinking poetry. Thanks to all y'all posting poetically (especially during Young People's Poetry Week, which this is), and particular thanks to all who've left comments or e-mailed me about my posted poems. It's appreciated!

My Brother Plays Accordion -- an accordion poem/a musical instrument poem

MY BROTHER PLAYS ACCORDION
By
Gregory K.

My life was really good, but then…
My brother “learned” accordion.
Some folks play it well, but sadly…
Not my bro – he plays it badly.
He puts his fingers on the keys
Then gives that beast a mighty squeeze.
Sounds emerge… but they’re not notes.
Instead, it sounds like angry goats
Plus honking horns and fighting cats
With just a pinch of screeching bats.
My parents don’t know what to say,
And both of them have gone quite gray.
We all so miss those days back when
Before there was accordion
When life was good without a care…
And my sister’s bagpipes filled the air.

The Answer is a Waffle -- a breakfast poem

THE ANSWER IS A WAFFLE
by
Gregory K.

What’s my favorite breakfast food?
That’s easy to decide.
It’s eggs cooked over easy with some bacon on the side.

Although, it might be cereal.
Or maybe jam and toast.
Actually, it’s cream of wheat that I enjoy most.

Or maybe, come to think of it,
It’s bagels with some lox.
Or maybe pancakes. No, it’s fruit, cut up in bite size blocks.

Or wait a second. Let me think:
A restaurant buffet!
Or maybe it’s, well, I don’t know...
I guess I just can’t say.

If a Freight Train Carries Freight... -- a poem about words/a question poem

IF A FREIGHT TRAIN CARRIES FREIGHT…
By
Gregory K.

If a freight train carries freight,
Why can’t a school bus carry schools?
Does a seat belt carry seats just like a tool belt carries tools?

If garbage bags hold garbage,
Why don’t handbags all hold hands?
If newsstands sell the news to you, do bandstands sell you bands?

If house pets live right in your house,
Do carpets live in cars?
If Earthlings are us folks on Earth, do starlings live on stars?

It really isn’t clear to me
How words are formed and used.
I’m sure I’ll learn it all some day… but now I’m just confused.

S'mores -- a camping poem/a s'mores poem

S’MORES
By
Gregory K.

The campfire burns. It’s 9:08.
I feel so good cuz I just ate
Two graham crackers, and chocolate, too,
With marshmallow turned to warm, white goo.
A treat indeed, a dripping mess.
A touch of melty joy -- oh yes!
It’s bedtime soon, but I’m not done.
I simply cannot stop at one.
Because, you see, it takes three s’mores
To make a night of happy s’nores.

And he speaks, too.

You thought you'd get through a month with JUST poetry? Nah. Though today I just had a few more poetry notes to yak about. You know... like where to go if you want more to celebrate this month.

Like check out Squash Blossom and look over on the right hand side for all the people writing and posting a poem a day this month for NaPoWriMo (National Poetry WRITING Month). Note that this (and the next two links) aren't children's poetry specific!

Need ideas or prompts? Check out Robert Lee Brewer's Poetic Asides or Read Write Poem and get some inspiration.

And in April (or any time of the year, really) visit the Wild Rose Reader and be immersed in the world of children's poetry... and maybe even win a book like I did!

I'm Not a Superstitious Guy -- a poem about superstitions

I’M NOT A SUPERSTITIOUS GUY
By
Gregory K.

I’m not a superstitious guy.
I never knock on wood.
A 13 doesn’t frighten me, although some say it should.

I let cats cross in front of me
No matter if they’re black.
Sometimes I walk on sidewalks, and I step on every crack.

No, I’m not superstitious...
Though, there’s one thing, I suppose –
If things go well for me all day, I do not change my clothes.

So now I’ve got a problem:
What I’m wearing clearly reeks,
But things have gone fantastically for twenty-one straight weeks!

Allergic to Homework -- a homework poem/a poem about allergies

ALLERGIC TO HOMEWORK
by
Gregory K.

I said “I’m allergic to homework.
It makes me cough and wheeze.
You send me home with mounds to do,
And I just snuff and sneeze.”

My teachers would never believe me.
“Allergic? We think not.
Maybe see a doc,” they’d laugh,
“And you can get a shot.”

Today my teachers aren’t laughing,
And I don’t mean to gloat,
But they can’t give me homework now:
I’ve got a doctor’s note!

I'm posting an original poem each day in April in celebration of National Poetry Month. Links to this and other poems here on GottaBook (and I post all year round, because poetry is NOT just for April!) are collected over on the right of the blog under the headline "The Poems".

If you want to get all my new poems (and only the poems) emailed to you for freeee as they hit the blog, enter your email address in the box below then click subscribe!

My Dad's A Hippopotamus -- an animal poem/a zoo poem/a point of view poem

MY DAD’S A HIPPOPOTAMUS
by
Gregory K.

My dad’s a hippopotamus.
He’s dad to quite a lot of us.
You think that’s strange? I don’t know why,
Since we’re all hippopotami.

We’re friends with a rhinoceros,
Who I think looks preposterous.
I’m glad that I don’t spend time bein’
Something so rhinocerian.

We live next to a crocodile.
He’s over there on his own isle.
He’s got big bumps on each short limb.
I’m glad that I don’t look like him.

We also know a chimpanzee,
The strangest creature that you’ll see.
Those gangly arms look out of place,
And I would never want his face.

Right nearby’s an ocelot.
He likes to mew and roar a lot.
With spots and splotches hard to miss,
I think he looks ridiculous.

But there’s one creature that we see
That’s most absurd. We all agree.
It comes to visit at our zoo.
And...oh... how sad! It looks like you.

More... and elsewhere at that.

Ya know, it's not just a National Poetry Month here at GottaBook. It's everywhere, I tell ya. But more specifically, if you go over to this post at A Wrung Sponge, you'll see who's doing what and where. For example, fellow Cybils judge Jone is blogging a poem a day at Deo Writer and the poetry club she runs at school is writing poems and mailing 'em out on postcards! (Want one? Check it out!)

Anyway, if you hadn't noticed, I love the whole community aspect of this month, too, so I hope you click off and see what else is going on.

Books From Where? -- a poem about books/a library poem

BOOKS FROM WHERE?
by
Gregory K.

This book says the world is flat.
That book says a wolf’s a cat.
That book says a peach is bread.
This book says that green is red.
This book says we drink the air.
That book says a baseball’s square.
That book says the ocean’s dry.
This book says that boys don’t cry.

These books are great, don’t you agree?
I got them from the Liebrary.

I'm posting an original poem each day in April in celebration of National Poetry Month, and I thought this one had a nice April Fools kinda touch to it to get things started. Links to this and other poems here on GottaBook (and I post all year round because poetry is NOT just for April!) are collected over on the right of the blog under the headline "The Poems".
